The CP 4500 series were MLW-built units : The C-630 model, numbered #4500-4507, and the M-630 model, numbered #4508-4516 and #4550-4581. The 8 C-630 units were built in 1968, and the M-630 units in 1969-1970. The M-630s were powered by a 3000 Hp. ALCO V16 4-cycle 251 turbocharged engine.Most of the M-630s were renumbered early in their career because of installation of the Locotrol 1 and Pacesetter slow speed equipment in 1971, for use in coal train service between the coal mines in Southern B.C., and the westcoast. All units were retired by 1995, some after being retired and again un-retired.
